In this week’s Humpback Chronicles, Flip is joined by Dr. Jim Darling and Ginny Juarasz to share the story behind the revelation that Hawaii’s humpbacks migrate to and from Southeast Alaska. Ginny and Jim share the “Aha!” moment in 1979 when they found fluke photo ID matches between the Juarasz Family’s Alaska catalog and Jim’s Hawaii catalog.

In this week’s episode, Flip is joined by Connie Sutherland, a long-time supporter of the whale research community in Maui. Connie and her late husband Charles B. Sutherland owned and operated The Whaler Ltd., a Lahaina shop, and founded “The Maui Whale Watchers.” In the mid-1970s, Charles founded the Maui chapter of the American Cetacean Society. The Sutherlands and their store became a sanctuary of support for researchers over the years and in 2001, Whale Trust named a new research boat after Charles B. Sutherland in honor of his enthusiasm and support for whale research. We are so thankful for the Sutherland’s support of research over the years and for Connie’s ongoing support — especially at Whale Tales each year!
