SCHOOL OUTREACH: Inspiring the Next Generation

Student listening to Whale Song

One of our most important goals is to inspire students to become active stewards of the environment; to increase student interest in the marine sciences and to provide first-hand experience with researchers and techniques currently used to study marine mammals.

To accomplish these goals, we have worked with educators from Hawaii and Alaska to Texas and Florida, and in partnership with National Geographic’s Jason Project to develop experimental long-distance outreach programs, bringing daily online reports and lessons “from the field” to classrooms around the country.

Nationally and internationally, we also  provide research experience, mentorship, volunteer internships, courses, and funding for older students (high school, undergraduate, and graduate).

Whale Trust in Our Schools

Whale Trust leads and develops educational programs involving classroom visits and guided field trips for local schoolchildren on Maui. In 2016, we partnered with Regal Lahaina Cinema Center, MacGillivray Freeman Films, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, Alaska Whale Foundation, and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary to bring whales up close and personal into classrooms and theaters around Maui.
Classroom visits culminated in a half-day field trip to Whale Tales where 200 lucky students participated in hands-on activities led by Whale Tales presenters including best selling author, Susan Casey, Alaska Whale Foundation’s, Dr. Fred Sharpe and Kenneth O’Brien, and the NOAA Whale Disentanglement Team. Students were also treated to an exclusive showing of MacGillivray Freeman Films recent award-winning IMAX film Humpback Whales led by Whale Trust’s Jason Sturgis, a cinematographer on the film.

In total, 850 4th through 8th grade students from Maui’s West Side participated in our programs this year. Many thanks to Karen Grosskreutz and Liz Stahl (Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary) for helping to coordinate this memorable and fun program.
