Hello students,
I work here at Whale Trust in Maui and wanted to say hi. Hope you are learning alot about whales. I heard that someone saw a whale here in Maui, which means the migration to warmer waters has begun.
Have fun!
Hello, everyone,
I’m Tom, or Mr. McKenna, a 4th grade teacher at Harborview Elementary in Juneau. Thanks for the report, Marcy and nice to see you starting this discussion.
It’s been a while since I’ve been out on the water. My own boat is under a tarp to keep the snow and ice out, but one of our class parents (Corey’s dad) is a commercial crabber. We’ll ask him for a report on whether he has seen fewer humpbacks in local waters lately.
Also, we’ve enjoyed a couple of good introductory lessons and are looking forward to sharing notes and questions with you all.
Best,
Mr. M.
Hi, I am Ms. Bancaco, a fourth grade teacher at Pomaikaʻi and I would like to thank you for putting this project on. We so far have learned a lot about whales and the history of whales in hawaii. For homework tonight, I hope that the students will tell you all about their research and projects they are working on!
Hi I am Sierra I am a student at Pomaikai Elementary school. Me and my group are working on our 2 draft on our story and adding details. Well I got to go.
my group is on draft 2 for our story.and we learned that when the hawwiians became in depth they started puting hawaiins on boats for$200
Hi,
My name is Lily Engh. I am a 4th grade student at Pomaikai Elemantary School on Maui, Hawaii. My group and I are accomplishing a lot. We are working on our 2nd draft and it is turning out really good !
Bye!,
Lily Engh
Hi Lily, Alexis and Sierra,
Thank you for sharing with us. I’m looking forward to coming to your class on Wednesday. Can you tell us some more about the story you are working on? Are you focusing on whaling in Hawaii? What is the most interesting thing you have learned so far?
Aloha,
Meagan Jones
Hi, Ms. Boncaco, Sierra, Alexis, Lily and Meagan,
Great to hear from you. I, too, am interested in these drafts and what you all are writing about and what you’re interested in.
I just Googled your school, and on these grey days, I’m thinking you’re pretty lucky to have those beautiful blue skies! Is your school near the water?
Looking forward to learning more.
Mr. M. in Juneau
Hi i’m Sydney Green fom Maui , Hawaii. My group and i have been working on draft 2 of our story and when we were doing our rechearch i found out that whalers killed 794,00 whales in hawaii in 40 years.[1900-1940]. Mr. Mckenna our school is not by the water. our school is in Kahului and Kahului is not by the water it is surrounded by land.
See you later,
Sydney Green
Hi! My name is Micah from Maui. My group is on our story’s second draft. We all have different kind of questions. Ours is ‘ What happened to the economy when the whalers came?’ We have lots of papers that have been highlighted. Alot of good facts.
Hi.
I am working on a story that is fun to read. I might put it here. I worked on laws of hawaii back in the 1820’s. The laws where: Do not steel, Do not kill, Do not commit aldutery, Do not work or play on the sabbath, and when a school comes out people shoud learn it’s legal documents.” Kamehameha the third made these laws.
Hi Everyone,
I’m Ms. Miyasato and I teach the 4th grade at Harborview Elem. School in Juneau. My class is participating in this project.
I have a whale sighting to report. On Nov. 30, 2008 I saw two humpback whales in Peril Strait. I was on a return trip from Sitka on the Fast Ferry called the Chenega. These whales were heading to the coast of Sitka, so I’m wondering if they are heading to Hawaii. I didn’t get to see their tails, so I wasn’t able to identify them.
Hello again,
One of my students was very fortunate to see a whale breech eight times in Juneau on a his way back from a camping trip.
See ya later
Ms. M.
Hi you guys!
Thanks for blogging last night. Tonight I would like you guys to answer the following questions insightfully and as best you can:
1) Why are whales important to me?
2)Why are whales important to our community and economy today?
3) How are whales linked to our culture here where I live?
It is really neat to hear that the whales are breeching in Alaska! Perhaps we will begin to see them here? Kids have you seen any whales on Maui recently (last 2 weeks)?
Aloha,
Ms. Bancaco
Hi all,
My name is Krys Kawamura (Ms. Kawamura) and I am a 4th grade teacher @ Pomaikai Elementary School. My class and I are working on our project as we speak. We are excited to learn about whales and finding answers to our questions. We can’t wait to hear from our new friends in Alaska! Hope to hear from you soon!
Hello!
I’m Eliza Wright, and I’m a 4th grade student at Pomaika’i. That’s cool that someone saw a whale. Just like Ms. Bancaco’s and Ms. Kawamura’s class, we are working on the whale project, too. Our class is working on the threats to humpback whales. We are doing this short little play, and my group is scene 5. Our play is about 2 tourists who came here for the winter, and went on a whale watch. If I told you the rest, it would be too long. This whale project is teaching me A LOT about the threats to humpback whales.
See ya later!

Good Morning teachers and students-
My name is Mrs. Stahl and I am helping with this project here in Juneau. Our weather today is 26 degrees. It feels a bit colder because we have moisture in our air like you do in Maui. We are right on the Gastineau Channel, which is sea water.
I am excited to read all about what the Maui school is doing. We are learning about threats ourselves. I hope the classes at Harborview will start blogging soon, so we can compare what we learned.
I would like to know what you kids do in your spare time, both here in Juneau and in Maui???
Yesterday morning I was taking pictures of a beautiful sunrise. The sun does not come up in the winter until about 8:30 am and it is dark by 4pm. We do not always see the sunrise or sunset because very often it is cloudy.
Happy blogging!!
Mrs. Stahl
Hi, we are excited to here from you! We are from Harborview Elementry school in Juneau, Alaska. All we are doing right now is reading about whales and what they do. We read about whales named Delta and Dawn. We also read about how they escaped. We also read about there songs. We learned how long a whale song is. We also learned that there are lots of stuff that can harm whales like bout propellers and fishing hooks. Hope to hear from you later.
Hello! My Name is Mrs. Potter. I’m here with Mrs. Hanson too. She is a student teacher in our classroom. I have not seen a whale lately, but Mrs. Hanson saw a Humpback breech 5 times in a row this summer. The Humpback also slapped its tail against the water repeatedly. This was very exciting for her because she is from Colorado and had never seen a whale before.
We’ve learned several theories of why whales breach. These include for mating purposes, breathing and feeding. Nobody is sure why they slap their tales, but some think it could be for play or perhaps getting rid of those pesky barnacles. Does anybody know why they do these things?
Have a great day!
Mrs. Potter
Hi this is Kylee and Olivia at Harborveiw school in juneau AK. We hope you learn a lot about whales. Here is something that we have learned. I learned whales bubble net feed. I have also learned that whales swim to Hawaii to breed and they go there in the winter. We would love to hear some stuff that you have learned. And we hope that you write back to us.
Kylee and Olivia
Aloha!!! This is Siniva,Taylor, and Conrad from Harborview Elementry School in Juneau, Alaska. We have been studying about whales the past 2 weeks and
we learned that there is always a leader in the middle of bubble net feeding, They are the same size as a school bus, Some whale’s songs last for 10-20 minutes. Another thing that we learned is that Humpback whales have 2 blow holes and that they also feed in Alaska and go to Hawaii to give birth.
Aloha my friends,
Our names are Mia and Conor and we go to Harborview Elementry School in Juneau, Alaska. We hope you are learning a lot about whales. In Whale Quest we learned that bow head whales can live up to 200 years long. We also know that whales breach for fun and to breath. We know that whales eat in Alaska and breed in Hawaii. Thats some of the info we know about whales. Please respond back
From.
Mia R. and Conor K.
Aloha! This is Elias, Quincy and Sarah from Harborview Elementry in Juneau, Alaska!
From Quincy – Our Whale Trust teacher told us that breaching is for, feeding, for fun and to breathe. In our class (not in whale trust but our class is in whale trust.) we are reading about whales and we have learned that a couple years ago, a mother whale and calf got stuck in the Sacramento River (fresh water) and researchers tried to get the whale out of the river with pipes and human stuff.
Elias wanted to add that a whales pectoral fin is 15 feet long. Also only approx. 30 whales in the world can successfully bubblenet feed by working together.
Sarah adds that two things that put whales in danger are boat propellers and fishing nets from commercial fisherman. This is really common here because there are many people who make a living from fishing. We even saw slides/pictures of different whales caught in nets. We also learned how the whales are rescued from the entangled nets.
Hope to hear from you soon!
Sarah, Elias and Quincy
Hi our names are Kyle, Victoria and Makoa. We’re a group of three from Mrs. Potter’s class at Harborveiw Elementry in Juneau, Alaska. Did you know whales only eat in areas like Alaska and don’t eat while they are having their calves in warmer waters? What do you know about whale’s eating and mating habits?
Did you know that if a whale is entangled you should never go in the water to untangle the whale? We also learned how NOAA scientists rescue entangled whales.
Hope to hear from you soon!
Kyle, Tori and Makoa
Hi our names are Jeran, Aakash and Isaiah and we are participating in the Whale-Trust Project. We are from Harborview Elementary school in Juneau, AK. We have learned that whales in Southeast Alaska use a technique called bubble-netting and in this method they will blow bubbles in the water like a net around schools of krill and then the krill will get scared and stay in the middle and the whales will swim straight up and eat the krill. A danger to whales is entanglement. This means that they get caught in fishing nets. We saw pictures of a whale who was caught. It was really hard for the Humpback to swim.
We also know that whales only eat food in Alaska and that they breed in Hawaii.
Sincerely,
Jeran, Aakash and Isaiah
Dear Alaska friends,
We are working on a project. Our question is ”Why do calves leave their mom after a year?” If you know any answers please tell. One answer we found out was that the calves are big enough to take care of them selves. Also if you respond say to Ms.Kawamura’s class, group 3.
Your friends,
Alex, Chloe,and Macie

Dear Alaska friends,
Have you noticed any change in the water temperature there? We are researching the water temperature between Hawaii, and Alaska. If you find anything that has changed about your water temperature e-mail Jayven ,Anthony, and Lium. Also if we find something new for our water temperature well e-mail you as well.
catch you later!
Aloha Alaska friends,
We are working on a project. We are at pomaikai elementary school .Our group’s question is how might the islands be important to the whales survival? We were wondering if you had any info on our question? PLEASE send us info about our question.Mahalo !!!!!!!!!!
Your friends,
Kiarra, Aimee, And Trisha
These are the responses to the 1st question from the class.
Whales are important to me because they are fun to watch and learn about. Whales are beautiful and special because they’re the biggest animal in the world. I appreciate seeing whales because most people in the world do not get to see them. I like how whales are not harmful to people. I love how whales are athletic and acrobatic in the water. I like the designs on the tails, they help us identify whales like “Lefty”. They are part of my Tlingit Culture. They’re mammals like us. I like the sounds they make & how they communicate with each other.
Ms. M’s class
Dear,Friends in alaska
we are work on a three person project. Our question is,is our islands important
to humpback whales survival. If you know any answers to our question please write back to us .

Aloha my friends,
my name is Taylor and my friend’s name is Nunthiya are question is why do whales push their calves to the surface?/with their newborn, do mother whales stay closer to the surface?
your friends,
Taylor,Nunthiya
Hi, I’m from Mr. McKenna’s class in Juneau, Alaska. I’m visiting the island of Oahu right now. I’ve spent alot of time at the beach but I haven’t seen any whales. Maybe it it to shallow near the beach for the whales. My dad is going on a 10 hour fishing charter. If I don’t go with him, I will ask him to look for whales. My Aunt was in Lanai a couple of weeks ago she saw dolphins breeding and calving. I think she said she saw whales too.
My name is Eliza Wright, and I live in Maui, Hawaii. It’s really cool to be talking to you from Maui! We (my class) had these people come in an talked to us about the whales, and how they do the bubble-netting. I didn’t really understand it a first, but I got it after a while. I think it’s REALLY cool that they do that, and it’s also really smart! We also learned that the humpbacks don’t eat when they come here. I think it’s really sad that fishermen still throw nets overboard. It’s mostly here in Hawaii. Well, I have to go! Bye! Good luck to both of us!

Hi!!
All my friends in Alaska!! I can’t wait to blog with you!! I am Shaye a 4th grade student @ Pomaika’i Elementary my favorite hobby is to go surfing and swim @ the beach.

goAlaska kids I learned that in Hawaii our beliefs about whales is that Hawaiians believed that Kaho’olawe a(hawaiian island) was a whale long ago. I know because the bump on the island Hawaiians believe that it is a whales dorsal fin and that was a whale long ago and it turned a island.
I got 2 go!!
hi! my last blog only said about the project, but shaye reminded me about me! soooooooooooo, just like my friend shaye, two of my favorite hobbys is surfing, and swimming @ the beach. I have a lot of other hobbys, but two of my other favortites are, dancing, and esspecially, acting. I am in a play right now. It’s called A Christmas Story. It’s about a boy who wants a BB gun for chiristmas, but everyone keeps on says that he’ll shoot his eye out. I am his super smart classmate, and also (as the same person), Ralphie’s crush’s best friend. My name is Helen in the play. got 2 go (gtg\g2g)!

Hi Ms.Bancaco its Jaden.
1)Whales are important to me because they keep the ocean eco system working and they have their babies here in Hawaii.
2)In Hawaii it helps us with our Pacific Whale foundation whale count and makes money for us with the tourist on the Whale watch trips
3)Lahaina is a old Whaling port. This location has a lot of history of the whales and the ancient records that told the stories of our ancistors.
hi alaska kids i learned that humpbacks have very good hearing and navy sonar is a big problem to the whales. my hobby is sports and animals.i have to go bye.
Hi Alaska students, It is me Braxton I am from Maui. I am in Ms,Bancaco’s class. We are studying about whales also. What part of the whales are studying? My group is studying hawaiian ledgends about whales. Whales are important to me because I like to here them singing while I am swimming. Also because they are fuin to watch when they breech. Whales are important to our economy today because tourists come to see the whales, so it provides jobs for people here on Maui. I excited to find out about how Hawaiians cared about the Humpback whales.
Dear friends in Hawaii and Alaska,
My name is Meagan and I’m the Director of Whale Trust and have been studying whales for nearly 20 years! So I’m thrilled to hear how much you are learning about whales.
I was happy to meet all of the students working from Hawaii today. You are all doing such great work, and I’m happy you are using this space to get to know one another and to ask questions. I will try to chime in and answer some of your questions when I can, but feel free to answer each other, too.
Someone asked about why the islands are important for whales?
Does anyone remember why Maui is such a special place for whales (and people) in the winter? We talked about several things today in the classroom… I’ll give you a hint — relatively warm, clear, shallow, protected waters in the winter provide an ideal winter environment for humpback whales.
Humpbacks prefer water in the 72-76 degrees (F) range during winter. Because of Hawaii’s mid-ocean location and the lack of large rivers pouring sediment (and other nutrients) into the ocean, we also have excellent water visibility here, which may be an important advantage for moms and newborn calves to see each other. Humpbacks also prefer shallow waters, which we have in particular off Maui between the islands of Maui, Lanai, Kahoolawe…
Ok, that should get you started. What else can you come up with?
It’s great that we are having reports of whales in Alaska and Hawaii simultaneously – that shows you how whales move in/out of both areas throughout this time of year. I once saw a humpback mother and calf here off Maui in July one time! It’s rare but does happen.
Has anyone heard whales singing in Alaska? At this time of year, humpbacks can also be heard singing in both places.
Well, good luck with your research and keep up the great work.
Much aloha,
Meagan
Hi!
My name is Chloe. I do art and soccer in my spare time.
Hey Alaska Kids! My partner and I learned that water quality and whale parasites can effect diseases on whales. Sorts of parasites that we found was that endoparasites burrow beneath the epidermal layer and it infests on the whale’s internal organs. Also stormdrains run off to the nearest waterway carrying oil, grease, fertilizers, litter, fecal bacteria and pesticides.
P.S Help save whales!! : ]
Hello everyone and Ms Bancacco im replying to answer your questions.
1.whale’s are important to me because there inspiring to watch.
2. Whales are important to our community because , the tourist pay to watch the whales . and that is how workers get payed.
3.During our winter months the Humpback Whales migrate to the islands of Hawaii to breed and raise the young it is at this time that we get to see the whales.
On my spare time I go to my freind’s house and play outside in a field or on the street. It is fun at maui. Whales also make summers fun beacause there is this thing called discovery camp and at the end they take you on a whale watch. If whales wern’t here there would not be a big grand fanali like that. So want to ask you alaska students. What makes whales speical to you.

Hi
Just ran across this news article regarding whale meat from fin whales (second largest species of whale) being sold in Japan, and thought some of you working on conservation issues might be interested.
The link to the story is below:

hi i am looking 4ward 2 this progect. my hobby is 2 do art.
No, fin whales are not extinct… if they were extinct there would be no more fin whales left to hunt.
Like other large whales, they were hunted intensively in the 1900s and are an endangered species. Does anyone remember what endangered means?
Between 1910-1975, over 74,000 fin whales were caught in the North Pacific alone.
Aloha,
Meagan

Hi everyone,
One of the current threats to whales is changing noise levels in the ocean, mostly from shipping, oil and gas exploration, and military sonars.
Below is a link to an article about how changing levels of acidity in the oceans (from greenhouse gases) is making it harder for whales to communicate.
Greenhouse Gases Make Oceans Too Noisy For Animals

Dear Ms.Bancaco,
1. Whales are important to me because they are cool, they teach us about our sea life and where we live.
2. Whales are important to our community because they migrate to Hawaii then go back to Alaska in Summer. Whales are important to our economy because they help our tourist industry by having whale watching tours.
3. They are linked here where we live because they come and migrate to the Hawaiian waters where it’s warmer.
Hi Eliza,
We have had groups of about 4-5 people and we have been reading about humpbacks. We had a blizzard in juneau. Trees were falling on cars and houses because the snow was so heavy! We bet Hawaii never gets a blizzard. We have read about what whales do underwater and other stuff like that. Hope to hear from you later.
Dear Lauren,
We have been studying bubble-net feeding and whale entanglement. Bubble-net feeding is when whales blow bubbles in the form of a net. The bubble-nets surround the krill/hering and then they swim up though the middle of the net and eat the krill/hering. Entanglement is when a whale gets caught in a man-made net and can not get out. Have you ever seen a baby whale?

Hi, Chelsey
It is kind of cold in A.K. We just got a foot of snow and 4 trees fell at Jonathan’s house and 1 of the 4 landed on his Dads car. At Tim’s and Pedro’s houses nothing cool happened.
Jonathan is 10 all most 11, Tim is 11 and Pedro is 9. Jonathan has seen all the things you mentioned about whales.
Some more things we’ve learned about whales are that whales songs can be heard from 100 kilometers on a clear day. We also learned that a whale’s tongue can weigh as much as an elephant and that there are about 90 different types of whales in the world. We have humpbacks, orca whales and Narwhals. The Narwhals are way up North from us. We think that it’s interesting that Whales fins use to be arms.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Jonathan, Tim, Pedro
Hi Sydney,
Thank you for telling us this information. It’s sad how many whales were being hunted. In Alaska, Native Alaskans are still aloud to hunt Whales. (Not Humpbacks, though) Keep us posted about more news about whales.
Here is some info on Juneau where we live. It’s located on the water and we get lots of rain. However, it snowed 10 inches the other day. School was delayed an hour because of it. Two trees fell on Mr. Haas’s house (P.E teacher) from the weight of the snow. We have one more week until Winter Break starts. We will be out of school from December 20th to Jan. 5th.
Conor K. and Olivia
Kailiahi,
Did you know whales spend over 90% of their life time underwater?!
A whales tongue weighs as much as an elephant!
This is Quincy and I think when I see a whale I get scared at first because they’re so big but then after a little bit I like them because they look so smooth. Elias here. When I see a whale, I feel excited and thrilled.
We have some questions for you:
What do you feel when you see a whale for the first time of the season?
Have you ever seen a whale give birth?
Mahalo!
Hi Shaye – How is it going? Hey have you seen a whale breech fully out of the water? Tori has. It’s really cool. We’ve learned that whales swim on their side when they are feeding. they don’t do this when they are bubblenet feeding. A whales tongue can weigh as much as a elephant! Holy Cow! That’s a lot.
We hope to hear from you soon.
Kyle, Tori, Makoa
Hi Cienna!!!! Yes, it is very cold in Alaska.Yesterday we had a snow storm and trees fell down on houses, cars, and drive ways. Some people couln’t even get out of there houses because it was such a big storm. But then today all the snow melted because it was so rainy. It’s snowy and slushy and rainy. We go to Harborview Elemetry School In Juneau, Alaska. We’ve been reading articles about whales and writing the intresting facts down. We’ve learned that whales come from Alaska to Hawaii to go give birth and that the mom whale dosen’t eat for three months.Another thing we’ve learned is that Calves get fed 40 times a day and can gain 100 to 200 pounds.
by the way Siniva was born in Monuloa, Hawaii and moved to Alaska 4 years ago. One thing i like to do here in Alaska is to dance the hula.
Conrad is a Native Alaskan, he likes to skii and to snow board and Conrad has been to Hawaii twice.haha
write back soon

ALOHA! My name is natasha. I am a fourth grader at pomaikai elementary. Whales are important to me because they are
an endangered species, and they live all around my island
home. My group is studying man made threats such as sonar, machinery and vessel collision.
To my friends in Juneau, i invite you to ask me questions about Maui or our whale friends.
Just wanted to report back that my dad didn’t see any whales or dolphins while on his boat trip. However, I went on a snorkeling cruise and saw dolphins but we didn’t see any whales. I fogot to ask the captain what kind of dolphins they were. Does someone in Maui know? They were not big like the porpoise in Alaska and their beak were longer. They like to jump out of the water and spin in the air. I think some of them were babies because they didn’t look much bigger than a big King salmon.
HI my name is Keely ! I’m a student at Pomaikai Elemantry School .My group is working on our pictures for our storys. It took us forever to make our storys perfect, but it is going awesome! If you read this letter what are you doing for your project?
Dear Lena,
By your description, it sounds like you saw Hawaiian spinner dolphins. Can you guess how they got their name?
Glad you had fun!
Meagan
Hi Kyle, Makoa and Victoria I am Shaye!! I am so happy to hear back from u!! Well u asked me how the project is going. This project is like never ending!!! It is very fun though!! My group is working in finishing our stories and pictures. Hawaii weather right now is very rainy that is our hawaiian snow!!! Right now it is snowing on Maunakea and Maunaloa. In Hawaii the only places that snow is Maunakea, Maunaloa and Haleakala because it is high enough. Maunakea and Maunaloa is in Big island(Hawaii), Haleakala is in Maui. If you have any more questions blog.
P.S. I dance hula for a group in upcountry Maui.
Oops!! I forgot to answer one question from Kyle, Makoa and Victoria I never saw a whale breach all the way. That must be cool!!
In Lahiana when you are driving on the high way you see whales blowing water. Sometimes they breach. The whales go to Lahiana because it is hotter over on that side of the island.

Macie,
This is Ms. Miyasato. We just finished painting on our canvas boards. Mrs. Stahl will bring these to Hawaii. Technically, we are done with the whale project. My students researched information about cetaceans and wrote reports. We haven’t had anymore whale sightings in Juneau. Have you seen any whales?
Ms. Miyasato
I’ve got to paint on canvas not to long ago
